No Haircuts Until March?!

By Leisa Mayer

If you didn’t hear...or read in last month’s SP issue...
I will be shaving my head BALD in public!

On March 29th, 2008, you will see me, and the Sacramento Parent Team, at the Westfield Galleria in Roseville between 4pm and 8pm. We are joining the Keaton Raphael Memorial (www.ChildCancer.org) and St. Baldrick’s Foundation (www.StBaldricks.org) to raise support for children diagnosed with cancer.

The Keaton Raphael Memorial (KRM), “A Beacon of Hope for Local Children with Cancer,” is the local organizer of the national St. Baldrick’s Head Shaving Celebrations. These worldwide celebrations raise significant funds for childhood cancer research. In 2007, KRM hosted the third largest celebration in the nation, raising more than $325,000 for childhood cancer research.

For the eighth consecutive year, St. Baldrick’s Day Celebrations—a play-on-words with St. Patrick’s Day—will recruit volunteers to shave their heads in public in return for financial donations from friends, colleagues and family. 100% of the pledges raised are earmarked strictly for research purposes. This year’s celebration promises lively “shenanigans” and fun for the entire family!

Why it is so important to help NOW...
• 160,000 children (just like yours and mine) are diagnosed with cancer
each year...that is enough kids to empty two classrooms each school day.
• Over 170 new cases of childhood cancer are diagnosed each year in the
greater Sacramento area.
• Each year 2,300 children & teenagers die from a childhood cancer.
• Despite research, cancer still kills more children than does asthma,
diabetes, cystic fibrosis, congenital anomalies & pediatric AIDS combined.
• This year, life-saving clinical trials are in a state of crisis. They have been CUT
by 50% due to a lack of funding at the national level. Childhood Cancer
research is the only hope for a cure!

Here’s what you can do to help...
• Join our Sacramento Parent Magazine Team as a shavee (anyone of any age can join—kids too!).
• Make a donation to Team Sacramento Parent Magazine online.
• Sponsor our Team with a pledge.
• Volunteer as one of our Team Members.
