Someplace Cool

By Shelly Bokman

Now that we have a Starbucks on every corner, and in the middle of some blocks, it’s almost too easy to find a coffee place. But if you’re looking for something more than the same old cookie-cutter coffee joint, someplace where you can relax and hang out with friends or just grab a quiet moment all to yourself, someplace that can really rock a coffee bean (instead of just masking their low-grade brew with high-fructose corn syrup), well… you’re in luck!

The Sacramento area is home to several truly excellent “third wave” coffee houses. (Good old Folgers-in-the-can being first-wave, and Starbucks being second.) So, next time you need a fix—or just a simple moment for mom—check out one of these unique and inviting spots. They’ll wow you with everything from their friendly service to their latte art.

The Art of Hanging Out
Coffee Garden
This location has a lovely outdoor garden with loads of funky, locally-crafted art, and some of it’s for sale! They also host open mic nights and have monthly art showings. This quarter's featured artist is the Sacramento Craft Mafia. (Check out our feature story, “She’s Crafty!” to learn more about the SCM ladies.) The Coffee Garden is planted at 2904 Franklin Blvd. in Sacramento. (916) 457-5507. www.thecoffeegardenonline.com

Fun for the Whole Family
Java Lounge
Happenings galore! They have everything from movie nights and art walks, to dance parties and Wii night. There are Big Kids Cartoons every Saturday morning from 10-12. And Kids Time! happens every Sunday from 11-1, offering stories, movies, music and games for your little ones while you relax with your favorite coffee and some grown-up conversation. You’ll find them in Midtown at 2416 16th Street. (916) 441-3945.

A Room of Your Own
Jericho Coffee
Jericho Coffee offers a way more relaxing atmosphere than your average ‘bucks. They also offer an array of Christian books to browse and purchase, and they host live music on Friday and Saturday nights. Best of all, they have a private room that can be reserved for meetings or small group get-togethers. Jericho is located at 8711 Sierra College Blvd, Suite #1, in Roseville.
