Meet: Visions in Education

Briefly describe yourself and/or your business.

Visions In Education Charter School is a California public school, which offers free home school and independent study programs for kindergarten through 12th grade students.  Visions combines personalized learning programs and a one-on-one relationship with a credentialed teacher.  Students and families choose either the K-12 Home school Academy or high school independent study opportunities.

The K-12 Home School Academy is for parents and guardians who choose to be the primary educators for their students.  Credentialed teachers work with families to provide support; they help to ensure students are meeting state standards, and also administer assessments to measure achievement.

The 9-12 Academy is a great option for high school students who have found the traditional school model not to be a good fit for them. You begin your schoolwork “right where you are” academically.  A teacher will be your primary educator and will work one-on-one with you to ensure you meet standards. The teacher will help you to meet requirements for graduation, and prepare you to have options after high school.

The new online pilot program is for high school students who are ready for a new way of learning that combines technology with relationships, and places an emphasis on project-based learning. Each student in the program will receive a Dell netbook and learn online; they also participate in field trips, and in small group meetings with teachers and other students. The program will initially be opened to one hundred 9th grade students.

In addition to Sacramento County, Visions serves students in eight other northern California counties:  Amador, Contra Costa, El Dorado, Placer, San Joaquin, Solano, Sutter, and Yolo.

What inspired you to start doing what you do (and when did you get started)?

During the 2009-2010 school year Visions’ staff, students, and families celebrated the school’s ten-year anniversary.  The charter school initially started up to fill a void for students who were unable to attend traditional schools or for parents who chose to educate their own students. This past school year Visions’ enrollment included more than 3,300 students.

What makes your business unique?

Our credentialed teachers meet with students and families in their community anywhere in the nine northern California counties we serve, and they personalize educational plans to help students succeed and graduate.

Visions In Education has a number of advantages:

«     Tuition-free.  Unlike private schools, we are a public school. We provide you with all the materials and services needed to succeed.

«     Flexible.  You choose when to study each day, unlike most schools with set schedules. The use of time can be driven by educational or other goals rather than by time wasted in non-productive activities.

«     Service-oriented.  Our teachers come to you, unlike traditional public and most other charter schools.

«     Individualized.  Your educational plan is flexible and personalized, while traditional and private schools often have one-size-fits-all.

«     Connection.  Unlike schools with large class sizes, we provide a one-on-one relationship with your teacher.

«     21st century skills:  Students learn life and career skills such as working independently and time management that make them more sought after in the workplace or by colleges.

Why are your services so important to parents?

Each year more and more families and students are finding that charter schools are a better fit for them. It’s always helpful to have plenty of resources when making the important decision about which educational program to choose.

«     We serve students from every background; we have a diversity of students- academically and culturally- who are pursuing many different goals, and who have each experienced a variety of challenges and opportunities.

«     Visions is a good choice for students and families looking for an alternative to the constraints of the traditional public school.
