Giving Together
Sacramento families have been hit hard in the past few years as our economy struggles. But our resiliency has paid off as businesses once again begin to thrive. And with this families can again think past their own immediate needs to the community at large. We are fortunate to have many organizations working hard to positively impact children and families in the Sacramento region. Below are a few that we at Sacramento Parent are happy to support. We encourage you to choose one that touches your heart and give of your time, resources or talents. Because it’s pulling together and supporting one another that truly makes us a community.
Safe Families
While state budgets are dwindling, the number of families in crisis is not. Safe Families for Children is a program that has operated successfully in other parts of the country and arrived in Northern California in 2011. This alternative to the foster care system allows families to stay intact while getting back on their feet. Learn more at Safe Families for Children or Kfh.org.
Wind Youth Services
Wind Youth Services works with youth experiencing homelessness, helping them find safety from the streets and giving them access to resources to help them move from crisis to healthy, functioning and independent lives.
The Wind Center provides meals, offers showers, laundry services, hygiene essentials, food boxes, water and other supplies. Youth Advocates work individually to connect youth with various services including life skills assistance, alcohol and drug groups, clinical support, family support, academic and school assistance, employment assistance, housing referrals and/or shelter, and medical advocacy. Origin Coffee
Origin Coffee & Tea has a business model you don’t see often—it is run by volunteers and every penny they make is given away to help fight human trafficking, locally and around the globe. So next time you need a caffeine fix, stop into their comfy Rocklin shop to visit. They have music on the weekends and small meeting rooms available. Learn more at OriginCoffee.org.
C2BU
As awareness grows of the horrific issue of human trafficking, a local organization has stepped up to provide a home for girls rescued from this nightmare. In August 2011 Courage House opened. Funds are needed to support the home and healing process for these girls, to expand the program and to continue to rescue girls. See our story A Place to Call Home or visit C2BU.org for more info.
Be Change
Equal Start and its numerous initiatives are making a dynamic impact on Sacramento's inner city. Activist and runner Jason Harper and his team are bringing awareness to the issue of health care access for the children of Sacramento's inner-city. Harper has made it possible to run for a reason and support the children and families who live in the heart of Sacramento's roughest neighborhoods. Read Iron Man and visit ExtraMileRun.com to help.
Mustard Seed School
The Mustard Seed School was established in February, 1989 to help meet the needs of homeless children. Many school-age children do not attend school because of their homelessness. Some lack immunizations, birth certificates, or other documents; some are in transit; and almost all lack a support system. In spite of their situations, these children are eager to learn and be accepted.
Mustard Seed is a free private school which serves homeless children ages 3-15 years old. Within a structured academic program, children can gain valuable skills, skills they’ll need to one day escape poverty. It’s also a place where children can laugh, relax and be children. They can unplug from the stressful world of homelessness. Each child feels wanted, secure, loved and can find hope for their lives.
Acres of Hope
Acres of Hope is a spiritually based renewal center that serves homeless women with children by providing them with a home and an environment of structured programming. Acres of Hope's unique approach allows residents to live onsite for up to two years while staff and volunteers invest heavily in their lives by providing encouragement, practical life-skills training, job skills, mentoring and spiritual direction.
Without a balanced approach, it is only a matter of time before negative thought patterns and habits rise to the surface and reverse any progress made. As a result, Acres of Hope is committed to the healing process of each individual, supporting their renewal process from the inside out.
