Last week I saw Michelle Rhee speak downtown about her new grassroots education reform organization, Students First. Rhee is the former Chancellor of D.C. public schools and was featured in the documentary "Waiting for Superman."
Rhee has been a divisive figure for her stance on wanting to reform teacher tenure- a hot topic, to be sure. She doesn't agree that "last in, first out," is a fair way to gauge who should be teaching our children. In other words, newer teachers are low men on the totem pole and are first to be pink slipped when budget cuts, like we're experiencing now, occur.
Rhee kicked off her California speaking tour in Sacramento because she's also a newlywed- she just married Mayor Kevin Johnson in September.
I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot more about Rhee and Students First. In the meantime, what do you think about teacher tenure? Do you think teachers should be judged based on their years of classroom experience or strictly on merit?
