Q: Help—I feel overwhelmed! I juggle work, soccer, girl scouts, housework… and I feel like my life is being consumed by all the demands in my schedule. Any advice on how to manage my time better?

I hear this cry for help so often in my family practice. So many busy moms feel exhausted, depleted, frustrated or guilty for not spending more quality time with their families. If you feel that your life is being consumed by too many demands, then it is time to think about your short and long term goals for yourself and your family, and start saying NO to things that deter you from what’s really important.

Most goals are achieved by taking small steps on a daily basis. Identify everyday time wasters (e.g., excessive Web browsing, e-mail checking or channel surfing). How much time do you spend driving around town? Can you simplify by bunching errands into one or two trips a week? Can you create a carpool schedule with other parents?

Determine only a few daily priorities, and include some form of physical exercise into your daily plan. Exercise will lower stress as well as increase your energy level. Also, consider things that feed your spirit and give meaning to your daily life, such as prayer, inspirational reading, or keeping a gratitude journal.

Determine what can slide on your to-do list. Most housework, for example, can take a back seat during the week if it allows you to spend more time with your family after work or school. Here’s another solution: Get the kids in on the cleaning action by setting a timer for 10 minutes, during which everyone pitches in for a “quick-clean.”

Give yourself permission to keep things simple. Prepare simple meals, and sit down to eat at least one meal together. Give yourself a head start on the next day by setting out clothes and preparing lunches, etc. the night before. These simple ideas can reduce stress, create more peace and help you manage your best life.
