Funderland

Old fashioned in a good way, Funderland is a small amusement park nestled right inside beautiful William Land Park (at Sutterville Road and South Land Park Drive), across from the Zoo and near Fairytale Town. Built in the '50s, Funderland is still giving kids memorable joy rides.

The park has ten rides appropriate for the 2-12-year-old crowd--with everything from classic cars to airplanes to a log ride. Very brave kiddos can even take a ride on the Dragon Coaster. The centerpiece of the park is a beautifully restored carousel, built in 1949. Oscar, the giant green octopus sporting bobbing fish (also built mid-century), is another not-to-be-missed attraction. Depending on size and age, kids can either ride alone or have their good-natured dad wedge his body into the back of a mini two-seater bi-plane. And moms and dads can get up-close to snap those happy, grinning faces.

Admission to the park is free, and you can purchase rides individually or get a day pass. Arrive early, and you don’t have to worry about waiting in line. Lunch time could be a picnic packed by an ambitious parent and enjoyed in leafy Land Park, or a decadent splurge on the classic faire food at the snack bar. This writer/mom has to confess, I indulged with the kids in a corn dog, icy lemonade and a huge, fluffy, pink cotton candy!

Funderland is a perfect introduction to amusement parks, allowing even a two-year-old many riding options while giving older kids plenty of thrills. The prices are staycation budget-friendly (not so much at bigger amusement parks), and the whole family leaves with a giddy, dare I say, nostalgic buzz. Funderland is definitely aptly named!
