Better Baby Food

By Amy Crelly

Make your own baby food? It’s less labor-intensive than you might think, not to mention cost-effective, super-nutritious and better for the planet. Why pay for all that packaging when you can buy organic, locally-grown fruits and veggies, and serve them up fresh and preservative-free? Try these tips to make doing it yourself easier:

To get started, simply mash or purée something the rest of the family is eating. For example, if you’re baking sweet potatoes for dinner, set aside an unseasoned portion for baby, mash until smooth and let cool.

Here's a tip: Stir in water, breast milk or
formula to make solids a little less solid.

To store homemade baby food, just pour into ice cube trays, transfer frozen cubes to small labeled and dated freezer bags, then thaw, stir and serve. They’ll stay “fresh frozen” for about a month.

Remember too: this isn’t an “all or nothing” commitment. You can serve store-bought baby foods alongside homemade and still reap big benefits.
