Paid Family Leave

You really can take time off!

Many of us will need time off from work to take care of a loved one or to bond with a new child at some point in life. I know what you're thinking... The budget crisis! The economy! Well, there's good news: Paid Family Leave (PFL) lets you take the time you need, whether you’re expecting a newborn or are welcoming a child into your family via adoption or foster care. And, there's even more good news:
PFL funds have not been affected by all the gloom and doom you've heard in the news lately. It's a separate fund, and chances are, you've earned your share.

How does it work? PFL provides up to six weeks of benefits, so you can bond with a new child, or care for a seriously ill child, spouse, parent or registered domestic partner. Most individuals receive approximately 55% of their pre-taxed weekly wage while on PFL. If you are covered for State Disability Insurance (SDI), then you are eligible for the Employment Development Department’s (EDD) Paid Family Leave program. For more information, visit the EDD Web site.
